The Sulu Archipelago of the Philippine Islands extends between Mindanao and Borneo and separates the Sulu Sea from the Celebes Sea. The largest island is Jolo. The Sultans of Sulu claimed sovereign rights over the north-east coast of Borneo from Boeloengan to Marudu Bay and over the north-west coast as far as Pandasan. In January 1878 Sultan Jamulal A'lam of Sulu transferred his sovereignty over all the lands lying between Soboeku and the Pandasan river to Baron von Overbeck, Austro-Hungarian Consul at Hong Kong and at one time the local manager of the China Opium firm of Dent and Company. Overbeck withdrew from the enterprise in early 1879 leaving Alfred Dent and his London associates the owners of a large territory. Sometime in 1879 Dent must have ordered designs for a copper coinage from Ralph Heaton and Sons. However, before any coins were struck, Dent became involved in the negotiations to form a new company. On 1 November 1881 the British North Borneo Company was established, and the territory granted by the Sultan of Sulu was transferred to the new Company. Heaton received an order from the new Company for a coinage of two million Cents. These coins were struck and bear the date 1882. The Pattern Cent offered here, together with Pattern Half and Quarter Cents, is illustrated on plate XI in a handbook published by The Mint, Birmingham, Ltd (formerly Ralph Heaton and Sons).

拍品描述:Aluminum Pattern Undated Heaton mint Cent, Struck with a reeded edge otherwise as KM-2. Comes with a ticket stating that it is ex: Farouk collection. It has wear, and is an XF coin that probably spent some time in a mint official's pocket. With everything that is different about it, it would make sense that it was struck before the 1882 coins as some sort of test piece. Not in Pridmore or Remick, and likely Unique. The reeded edge also points to a pre-1882 date as the copper coins of Straits Settlements pre-1884 were struck with a reeded edge and it is not much of a stretch to think that this would be preferred initially for B.N.B. From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection.

拍品描述:Copper Undated Heaton Mint Piefort Uniface Trial Pattern, Reverse only, as KM-2 but struck without a date and on a thick planchet weighing 18.5 gms (the regular coinage is 9.3g). Choice semi proof-like Unc lacquered. Comes with a ticket stating that it is ex: Farouk collection and probably ex Nasca Wayte Raymond 14 August 1978, lot No. 766, and probably ex Caldecott sale 1912, lot 252. This piece is much more difficult to date as there are no other series to compare and rationalize with, (as with the undated aluminum piece in this sale) because of the lack of date, one would want to go with the timing of the aluminum piece except the edge and thickness. We know that there is an 1896H Cent struck on a thin planchet as a Specimen strike, so there was obviously some considerations for different size of planchets during the run of this type. There is a 1903H 2 1/2 Cents, could there have been some consideration for a copper coin of this denomination instead of the copper nickel that was issued? Interesting to speculate, but difficult to prove. From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection.

Pridmore had a cleaned and lacquered ½-Cent that was said to be ex Farouk. Sweeny has photos for the ¼-and ½-Cents in his book on the Heaton mint, but these have yet to make it to the auction room. Pridmore’s 1-Cent brought £1,100 in 1982!
